Historically, the educational system of East Cameroon followed the methods of the French model and the West Cameroon's system was based on the British model. However, in 1976 the two systems merged and made up an overall stronger learning system in Cameroon, which has since become very popular in Africa.
There are 8 public institutions: the Universities of Yaoundé I and Yaoundé II, Universities of Buea, Douala, Dschang, Ngaoundéré and Maroua; plus, the Catholic University Institute. There are also important private universities such as the Bamenda University of Science and Technology, International University Bamenda and the Fotso Victor University in the west province.
